Amphetamines are stimulant substances, meaning they increase the rate in which messages travel between the body and brain.
•
This can result in greater wakefulness and energy. Prescription amphetamines are used by doctors to treat Parkinson’s disease, narcolepsy (a condition where a person experiences an uncontrollable desire to fall asleep), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD (a condition where a person is subject to frequent hyperactivity and impulsiveness, as well as a limited attention span).
•
Amphetamines are also illicitly manufactured, coming in potent forms such as crystal methamphetamine.
